A Guide to First Communion Veils
Though adorable, a First Communion veil isn't so much about looking like a little bride, as is often thought. Instead, the accessory is connected to history. Representing reverence and humility, a communion veil reflects a long standing custom of wearing head coverings in church.
As you put together your little girl's Holy Communion outfit, you'll find there's an overwhelming amount of headpiece and veil options. A little information can go a long way in making things easier! So, we've put together this First Communion veil guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
First Communion Veil Lengths
As we've mentioned, the function of the First Holy Communion veil is different than that of a bride's. Since they're for little girls, proportion is a consideration. Outside of church guidelines, length is dictated by your daughter's height, her dress, and ultimately, what she likes best.
Shoulder Length (19 -22 inches): Falling at or just below the shoulders, this is probably the First communion veil length you imagine when you think of it! It's a sweet, practical option that won't get in the way during the ceremony.
Waist Length (24-36 inches): Another of our most popular First Communion veil lengths, this one falls to around the elbows.
Fingertip Length (36 inches): Falls to the fingertips or slightly below when arms are at the sides.
Hip Length (45 inches): Typically the longest Communion veil, it drifts to around the upper thigh.

First Communion Veil Styles
You'll come across all sorts of different Holy Communion veil styles. Often, they are cut edge, meaning the net is left unembellished. However, there are other finishing options to complement your daughter's look. Be sure to check with your parish! Some do have rules regarding what First Communicants may wear.
Single Tier Veils: Always a classic, this is a single piece of netting that falls from a comb.
Two Tier Veils: Thanks to two layers of net, this style produces that fluffier, more voluminous look.
Ribbon Edge: The edge of the veil is decorated with a delicate satin or grosgrain ribbon. It looks very pretty with simple dresses!
Embroidered or Beaded Veils: Delicate embroidery, beading, or lace trace the veil's border, and can complement the patterns and fabrics of your daughter's communion dress.
All of the above are lovely alone, but are particularly charming paired with Communion headpieces!
How to Choose the Right Communion Veil
It bears repeating—the first thing to do is to review your church's First Communion dress code! After that, it's up to you and your little girl. However, the following are some things to take into consideration:
The Dress: The veil should enhance, not overpower, the dress. If the dress has elaborate details, an unadorned veil looks lovely. Conversely, a veil with decorative elements is well-matched with an unembellished dress.
Comfort: Remember that your daughter will wear this all day. Lighter fabrics like tulle are more comfortable than heavier materials, and shorter veils are easier to manage.
Hairstyle: Veils are typically affixed to your daughter's head via a comb. So, her hairstyle affects how well it will stay put! If your daughter wants to wear her hair up, or half up and half down, where her hair is gathered creates a natural spot to place the comb. If she prefers to wear her hair down, you will need a little engineering in the form of bobby pins. Or, you can choose a Communion headpiece to which you can attach the veil. Crowns, headbands, and halos are all terrific options.
Caring for Your Communion Veil
Here's how to take care of this keepsake after the big day!
Clean: If your little one was careful, there may not be much to do other than dab at a spot or two with a damp cloth. But, if she's done a lot of playing, try handwashing with a very gentle detergent formulated for underthings.
Steam: Never Iron net or tulle - it might melt! Instead, use a steamer and hold it at a safe distance while using light, sweeping motions.
Store: Store the veil flat or loosely folded in an acid-free box or wrapped in tissue paper. Placing it in a plastic bag can cause yellowing.
